The Metal
It may be easier than choosing a diamond, so let's start by the choice of your engagement setting. You will have the choice between 3 metals : Yellow Gold, White Gold and Platinum.
Platinum is a rarer metal than Gold, heavier too and very scratch and tarnish resistant, making it more expensive too. It also became more and more popular these last years, due to its properties.
The bright and sheen color of Platinum reflects more light and so intensifies the sparkle and brillance of diamonds. This is why White Gold is now prefered to Yellow Gold. Indeed, its cheaper and its color is similar to Platinum.
Yellow Gold is a classic color, the most common color. You can read our precious metals education page to learn more about them.
But to make your decision easier, what is her favorite metal ? This was discussed in the previous step. If you find the way to know these things, then you will not have these questions at the time of your choice.
The Setting Style
Another matter of preference, what style would she prefer ? Actually, you could decide yourself. Of course she is the one who will wear the engagement ring, but it is also some of yourself that you put in it. So maybe you can select a style that you think she will love.
Common styles available are Solitaire ring, Sidestone ring, Tension ring, Pavé ring. And more if you consider the designer styles.
We're approaching the diamond question with the style of a ring. One diamond (Solitaire, Tension) or three and more (Sidestone, Channel, Pavé) ?
A Solitaire ring is a classic traditional ring, with only one diamond in the center of it. The simplicity of this style is always appreciated. Plus, a fine ring can make the diamond look bigger.
Tension rings are spectacular. The ring is not full, and the space is filled by the diamond.
Sidestones rings have additional diamonds set on or in the ring. On a Three-stone ring, the three diamonds represent the past, the present and the future. 2 of the diamond are already on the ring, you will have to choose the center diamond.
Now, how to choose a diamond.
